Our History

While our main goal as a café is to provide you, the customer, with high quality food and excellent service, we also have three organizational priorities which will result from a successful café:

1. We will provide Tajik women with excellent job skills in a healthy environment, earning a livable wage.

2. We will enable those employees who desire further advancement to start food service businesses of their own.

3. We will use the proceeds from the café for humanitarian work to help the people of Tajikistan.

Many of Morning Star Café’s regular customers know about Donna.  She came to Tajikistan on a cold day in October 2004 with a vision. Her vision was to start a café whose purpose would be to pay Tajik women a livable wage.  More importantly, it would train them in business and life skills with a goal of giving an opportunity to some of those enterprising ladies to start businesses of their own. Working with Convoy of Hope Tajikistan, an International NGO,  and partnering with El Shaddai, a local NGO, she began the process of seeing her vision come to fruition.

Donna and Stephanie Monday began with cooking classes for willing ladies and slowly built the skills that they needed to work in a café environment.  Later, they found a building on Umar Khayum which would be the future home of Morning Star Café.  After one year of training, remodeling and hard work, Morning Star Café was ready to open to the public.  Its Tajik name, Citora-ee Subh reflects that this was a joint effort between Tajik and international citizens.

In fact, part of the proceeds of the café go to support the humanitarian work done by these organizations to help the people of Tajikistan.

A New Location

Morning Star Café has since moved to a new location driven by the overwhelming success of the business.  But it will never lose its founder’s vision for helping the women of Tajikistan.
